WHY CHOOSE TO INSTALL ANTI-HAIL SYSTEM IN THE ORCHARD?

Anti-hail systems are a fundamental tool for fruit farms, to secure the cultivated production and guarantee profitability, thanks to the harvest quality fruit. It is now known to all that the changing climatic conditions no longer allow to design an orchard without protection but that it is even often necessary to strengthen the system to make it more resistant to atmospheric events, which are increasingly violent and unpredictable.

Advice&Consulting has a wide range of types of monofilament woven nets available, reinforced in the center and at the edges, in different colors depending on the percentage of shading.

Portable stapler with lithium battery

WHY IS THE STAPLER USEFUL?

The professional stapler, supplied free with the purchase of the net, is very useful in the assembly phase, to join the nets efficiently and fix any tears that may occur. Some fruit companies join the nets with plates, but the nets are less resistant to tension, and holes can also be created. When sewing nets through the machine, this doesn’t happen.

Pears: the harvesting of Carmen variety in Italy

IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HARVESTING PEARS IN INTENSIVE ORCHARD

  1. HARVEST PERIOD: in Italy it’s the third ten days of July. Pears are a climacteric fruit, that is, they are able to ripen even after being detached from the plant. Depending on the climatic conditions, ripening can be more or less fast. This allows us to harvest the pears when they are still a little unripe (therefore they are still hard), it is better to anticipate a little and let them complete ripening after harvest, especially in the case of cold storage.
  2. FIELD SELECTION: based on the climatic conditions of the year, decide on the ideal caliber. Select the fruits in the field, using the caliber of the decided size, positioned on the central side of the bin, where it is also necessary to position the box for the discarded pears of a smaller size.
  3. ATTENTION TO THE PETIOLE: a pear without the petiole is considered a waste pear. Be very careful to detach the petiole from the branch well, avoiding injury to the skin of the fruit. In the case of long petioles, be careful not to break them. Place the index finger on the petiole and turn the pear upwards.
  4. HARVEST: gently place them in the bins, avoiding too much overlapping of the fruits so as not to damage them. After harvesting, place a cloth to avoid overheating of the fruits and transport them to a cool place.
  5. PACKAGING: carry out the sorting and positioning in the appropriate pockets inside the boxes in a cool place.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF CARMEN VARIETY

The visual characteristic of the Carmen variety is the bright red over-coloring of the side exposed to the sun, extending over 20-30% of the yellow-green surface, which forms towards maturity and is accentuated during storage, a color much appreciated by consumers.
Moreover, it is now the reference variety for earliness, after this variety the varieties Santa Maria, Williams, Conference, Decana, Abate Fetel and Kaiser are harvested.
Some other information about the Carmen variety: medium-fine pulp, juicy, aromatic and with good taste characteristics. Fruits with a high shelf-life, little or no subject to decay, particularly resistant to handling. The shelf-life in the cold room is good.

FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: THINNING

The thinning of the pear tree is a fundamental operation to increase the yield of the harvested fruit and normalize production over the years, minimizing the phenomenon of alternation.

Thinning should be done when the small fruit reaches a size of 20-25 mm, as soon as the drop has finished after withering, to prevent the plant from losing too much energy in carrying on all the fruit.

How to correctly pick the cherry fruit

IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HARVESTING CHERRIES IN INTENSIVE ORCHARD

THE RIGHT MOMENT: the best cherries are those left to ripen completely before harvesting as they are better not only for their size but also and above all for their richness in sugars and flavor in general. It is therefore necessary to identify well, for each variety, the best time for harvesting, to be carried out when they have reached the size and color typical of the variety.

THE PLATFORMS: preventively review the platforms. Thanks to the special collection platforms it is possible to reach the highest branches and advance along the rows, collecting the cherries at the same time along two rows at a time.

ATTENTION TO THE PETIOLE: detach the petiole from the branch with one hand by performing a half turn on itself and rotating them upwards, holding the branch with the other hand: the petiole must not offer resistance and must remain attached to the fruit, which otherwise rots quickly; if, on the other hand, it resists detachment, do not insist: you could damage the tree.

BEWARE OF THE GEMS ON THE BRANCHES: be careful not to remove the bud at the base of the petioles from the branch, otherwise no cherries next year!

GENTLE HARVEST: gently place them in the harvest boxes. Do not overfill the crates to avoid fruit compression and bruising.

SELECTION IN THE FIELD: make a first selection of the fruits in the field, discarding the damaged cherries already. In this way the second sorting will focus on the caliber.

COOLING: cherries can have a short life, if you do not prevent them from heating up after removing them from the tree. Immediate transport to the warehouse is recommended. In the case of the cherries remains in the containers for even a few hours in the field, cover them with a coarse cloth wet with water, so that the evaporation of the water removes heat from the underlying mass.

PROCESSING: carry out the sorting and positioning in the baskets according to the caliber in a cool place.

If there is no storage refrigerator and hydrocooler passage, we recommend marketing within 48 hours after harvesting.

How to obtain the premium quality cherry

How to protect fruits from cracking and obtain the premium quality cherry?

The fresh fruit market, in particular cherry is increasingly demanding, so it requires perfect fruit, with big caliber, good color, crunchy sweet and aromatic consistence.

Hand in hand, the cherry supply chain is facing huge innovations period: new resistant varieties, with high hardness and shelf life, new breeding forms, precision mechanisation for defence with a multifunctional approach, packaging and storage with new technologies and know-how, which allow marketing periods of even more than 30 days.

For fruit companies it is therefore essential:

  • Obtain high quality fruit (calibre and color)
  • Protection from cracking
  • Guarantee the optimal ripening process of the fruit, without encountering problems due to the modification of the climatic conditions that are created under the fixed cover systems
  • Have a system that is easy to open and close to simplify management and reduce labor time and costs

The traditional support system method of the cherry orchard consists of the poles on which through wires, hoods, plackets and elastics, rainproof cloths are attached to protect the fruit.

The rain clothes are opened manually for the pollination of the bloom, then leaving the plants covered until the end of the fruit harvest.

The conditions created by the traditional structure could lead to various issues as for the plants – the humid climate under the rain clothes leads to creation of the monilia – so for the fruit – peel less thick and tender.

The solution chosen by Advice&Consulting® is the “Multishield” technology, made by a structure of pre-stressed reinforced concrete poles positioned at a greater distance from each other on the row; on this structure completely anchored to the ground, hoods are applied and the wires and ropes are stretched to create a sort of “binary” where the rainproof clothes can slide.
These clothes, cut to the same extent as the distance between the poles and fixed to the “binary” with special rings and plates, thus acquire an ease of sliding which makes opening and closing operations easier.

In this way, it is possible to manage the cover system as if it were an umbrella, opening it when there is the risk of rain and keeping it closed when the weather conditions are favorable for the fruit to ripen, giving it more color and sugar.

MAXIMUM SIMPLICITY IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THE SYSTEM AND FUNCTIONALITY: 2 people are enough to open and close the clothes at any time!

If you want to make this operation even faster and more effective, Advice&Consulting® offers the Wayki® automized system:

1 SINGLE WORKER CAN CLOSE OR OPEN THE COVER OF ONE HECTARE OF LAND IN LESS THAN ONE HOUR!

The Wayki® system is operated with an electric drill inserted in the special device installed on the head poles.

Watch the video and find out more about Wayki® technology

The Multishield system is suitable for both small fruits and kiwi orchards and cherry orchards of significant size, with a maximum height above ground of 5 meters.

This system is multifunctional, that is, it is able to perform several functions at the same time:

  • rainproof
  • anti-hail: implementing a specific cover that is positioned above the rain cover
  • windproof
  • thermoregulator because it protects against temperature fluctuations by regulating the temperature and ensuring a balanced climate
  • insect repellent (Drosophila Suzuki, Carpocapsa, Asian bug) if equipped with perimeter closures to create a “monobloc” and thus prevent the entry of insects (the closures can be customized according to the optimization needs of the system and the surrounding space.

It is essential to have a versatile system, which offers economic benefits not only in the first phase of purchase and construction, but also in maintenance and management and … above all, which guarantees the production of large, colourful, shiny, premium cherries!

Other important aspects for innovative control of the physiology of cherry ripening are management of the frost, packaging lines and controlled atmosphere.

The agronomic advice on the «Chemical Thinning»

THE CHEMICAL THINNING: ADVICE&CONSULTING® AGRONOMIC ADVICE

The chemical thinning of the orchard is one of the most important practices to be performed to maximize the quality of the productions and has several advantages compared to the manual one:

  1. Economic advantages: savings in labor
  2. Time-saving: it is a faster operation performed through the use of the atomizer
  3. Guarantee of success: this method is simpler and more effective, requiring no special skills, but in compliance with the agronomist’s recommendations

CHEMICAL THINNING ON THE GALA PLANT AT THE 3rd YEAR

N.B. in 1-2-year-old plants, chemical thinning is not recommended, in the case of very vigorous plants, evaluate with the agronomist to apply the thinning ONLY to the top of the plants.

FACTORS TO BE EVALUATED FOR THE APPLICATION OF CHEMICAL THINNING

  • AGE OF THE PLANT (the younger the plant the more sensitive it is to thinning)
  • HOURS OF LIGHT (the more hours of light the less effective the products)
  • ALTITUDE
  • CLIMATIC TREND: if the plant is wet the products are washed off more easily (it is better to apply the products on a dry plant). The effectiveness of thinning products is influenced by the climatic conditions that occur during application and the days following treatment.
  • CONSIDER THE PRODUCTION OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR
  • MEASURE THE FRUIT DIAMETER (measure the central fruit on mature branches, never measure the fruit on one-year-old branches)
  • ASSESS THE THINNING BASED ON THE VARIETY OF APPLE PLANTS
